Self defense is such a broad term that the history of it cannot be pinned down in the least. It is safe to say, however, that the broad spectrum of self defense can be considered as having come from the dawn of time – even the earliest forms of human had to learn how to protect themselves and teach their strategies to others. From there self defense evolved into less primitive forms and into delineated and disciplined forms, such as with martial arts.
Verbal self defense, the use of your voice in a threatening situation, is an extremely important tool in protecting yourself. How?
The alternative self defense product, stun gun, requires a bit of introduction. A lot of people when they first hear the term “stun gun”, they actually think of the little gadget featured in many science fiction movies. In fact, self defense technology has come a long way.
In the USA, every two minutes a woman is being raped.
A 1993 survey revealed that 50% of Canadian women have experienced an incident of sexual assault or physical violence.
In Australia, 19% of women aged 18 to 24 experienced an act of violence in the last year.
Statistics show that one in very four women in America will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.
These are SHOCKING statistics!

Increasing personal safety ALWAYS commences with awareness.
Since most men may be attacked in almost any situation and for a wide-ranging variety of reasons I offer the following advice.
Here is a list of ten simple things that you can do immediately that will increase your safety:
Self defense is not just about learning a few self defense techniques, it's about all the things we do on a daily basis to make our lives safer. This is a list of simple guidelines that may just help you realize some potentially dangerous situations. They may just trigger a sense of awareness in you.
Alarms are the number one deterrent for burglars.
Fit Deadlocks on all doors and windows, do not leave the key in the lock but leave a key in each room in a place well known by all family Members in case you needed to get out in emergency.
Dogs are a big deterrent to Burglars.
This technique will also allow a good clinch set up from a kick combination. With some practice this combination can be so successful as to stop the attacker dead in his tracks. Just remember not to put all your eggs into one basket. Although this is a great technique there are many variations possible on the street and you need to keep an open mind and be prepared to adapt to any possibility's.
Now lets get to the point.
The cry of "Self defense!" is common among those who get into trouble for fighting. Often this is heard from both parties, which makes the statement suspect. Self defense is a complex concept. The defining the word is the easy part. In terms of cultural and legal meanings, it gets even more confusing; however, the purpose of this article is to examine what goes into self defense, rather than dissecting techniques or what comes after.
These 17 safety tips are on target to protect yourself and your property away at school...while still having college fun.
Not to mention, just think how at ease your parents will feel when you tell them about your safety plan.
1. Find out the best route between your residence hall, classes and activities. Take the safest route, not the fastest.
There are good Bus Tours and there are really bad ones. To understand why, you have to understand the bottom line and that's what the bus tour companies are most concerned with; rightly so, because they have to make a profit or close their doors. But this doesn't mean their tours should "take you for a ride" if you'll forgive the pun.
Self Defense is not just about learning a few techniques; it’s about all the things that we do on a daily basis to make our lives safer. The first lesson to learn in Self Defense is to know that you are the most important person in your life and you are well worth fighting for. Nobody has the right to hurt, intimidate or harass you. The second lesson in Self Defense is to realize that your mind is your most valuable weapon; we use our mind to control panic and fear, we use our brain to assess a situation and decide the best action to take.
There is nothing more impressive than shopping in a mega mall with more stores than you can visit in a year. The malls get bigger and bigger every year. With more square footage and more stores comes bigger parking lots. Bigger parking lots mean more and more customers have to park what seems like forever away from the final destination. It is good exercise for sure to make that trek however it is fraught with potential risks among them are theft, vandalism, rape, assault, robbery and even kidnapping.
One of the more dangerous types of people in the world are sociopaths -- the 4% of the population who don't have a conscience. Who're not "wired" to care about anyone else.
The kind of people who can rob, hurt, torture even kill another person without thinking twice -- as if it's just another "chore" on their list.
But knowing they exist and what they are capable of is not enough. The frightening thing about them is they rarely pose as dangerous people to their victims. And so, it's equally important to know how to identify them, so you know when you're dealing with one or not.
Did you know that when you begin learning martial arts, self defense and how to handle yourself in a violent situation, you actually start to give off certain "vibes" in your regular, every day life, that tell people you're not someone to mess with?
It's true.
In fact, I've seen this phenomenon so many times, it doesn't even surprise me anymore.
For example, a martial arts student of mine (someone who is small and looks anything but "tough") once told me how his wife started noticing a change in him within just weeks of starting his self defense classes.
Sometimes in my street-fighting classes, I will get students who complain, whine and moan because I will put them through drills that seem "pointless" to them.
Usually this happens when they are least expecting it. In other words, I will be drilling them on something or maybe have them huddled around telling them something. Then, without warning, I will tell them to grab a training knife in the corner and spar. Or pick a partner, one pinning the other to the ground. Or grab a partner with one getting a training knife and the other nothing.
It's pretty much common knowledge if you study statistics or talk with law enforcement officers that the majority of fights eventually end up on the ground.
But what may not be so well known and obvious is this almost fool-proof way to win a ground fight without needing to know a lot of moves or techniques -- and that works regardless of your size, strength, weight and power.
Listen to this:
If you've ever been in a ground fight then you know it can tire you out very quickly, not only physically, but also both mentally and emotionally.
For many people in the martial arts world, it is pretty much common knowledge that, in order to fight multiple attackers, you basically should find something -- anything -- you can use as a weapon.
Because even something as small and ordinary as a garbage can lid or your belt can actually serve as an "equalizer" in a fight.
But, there are times when multiple attackers will surround a person and there is nothing handy to use as a weapon. No stray sticks, rocks, or even so much as a belt or object of any kind.
As millions of wide eyed teenagers prepare to leave home for the first time and head off for their freshman year of college, the anticipation of exploring new things, experimenting, and oh yes learning too, fills the hearts and minds of those teenagers. Thoughts of rape, drugs, assault, and a myriad of other hazards fill the minds and hearts of the parents and scare the living daylights out of those parents.
I would never disrespect one fighting art over another. I would recommend that you look into the various types available to you and ensure the one that you choose satisfies your criteria, whether you want to be more involved in a traditional art, a competitive sport, keep fit, a family recreation or purely for self defense. Go and watch a few classes and see what you think for yourself, talk to the instructor and if it's Self defense that you are interested in and then ensure that they dedicate a large portion of their instruction specifically to self defense training.
Free advice is usually worth what you pay for it, and that also goes for self defense tips, especially regarding a knife assault. Many that look cool in a book or movie will get you killed in real-life.

Knife Self Defense Tip #2
Ahhh to be a teenager again!! How many of you have thought that very thought and said no thank you. There is no question in my mind that teenagers today are faced with many more challenges than I had when growing up (about 100 yrs ago). Female teenagers today are so fashion conscious-I mean you can't go to a grocery store or anywhere for that matter without seeing advertising geared to this huge market-the fashion conscious teen.
Okay, you're a nice person and so am I and neither of us ever intend to have any trouble especially of the physical kind. But the possibility that you might be confronted by someone who plans on getting physical is real. Personally, I have been held up at gunpoint and one of my two brothers was targeted outside a mall movie theater a few years back. That's 2 out of 3 siblings. So what are your chances? What will you do about it?
First, do as much as you can to avoid a confrontation -- anticipation and avoidance are the keywords.
a) Be aware of your surroundings, stay in the light.
So, you have decided to take up jogging in order to shed a few pounds. Because the neighborhood is not what it used to be, you opt to purchase a can of self defense spray. Simple enough, huh? Not necessarily.

Most people assume that in the event of a self defense shooting their problem ends with the shooting. An armed citizen buys a handgun, trains in its use, earns a carry permit, gets attacked, defends themselves, and survives. It is pretty reasonable to assume that that cycle is over. Unfortunately its not, a new cycle begins where people begin to pick apart the citizens actions, and decide using the benefits of hindsight and comfort what a person did instantly and under the stress of a lethal encounter. The police, the prosecutor, judge, and possibly a jury will decide the citizen’s fate.
Pepper sprays, stun guns, kubotans, they all work well for preventing an assault, but does one self-defense weapon really work any better than another? There is no short answer to this question.
